Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral Appliance Therapy for Better Sleep and Breathing

If you snore at night, wake up feeling unrefreshed, or have been diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, an oral appliance or mandibular advancement device (MAD) may be the simple, comfortable solution you’ve been looking for.

What is a Mandibular Advancement Device?

A MAD is a small, custom-fitted oral appliance that you wear while you sleep. It gently moves your lower jaw forward, helping to keep your airway open and allowing you to breathe more easily throughout the night. This forward position also moves the tongue away from the back of the throat, reducing airway collapse.

How it Helps with Sleep Apnea and Snoring

When we sleep, the muscles in the throat relax. For some people, this relaxation narrows or blocks the airway, leading to snoring or repeated pauses in breathing (sleep apnea). By repositioning the jaw, MADs:

  • Reduce or stop snoring

  • Improve oxygen flow to the body and brain

  • Decrease daytime fatigue and brain fog

  • Support overall cardiovascular and metabolic health

Benefits of a MAD

  • Non-invasive: No surgery or loud machines

  • Portable & travel-friendly

  • Custom & comfortable fit made by your dentist

  • Adjustable: Can be fine-tuned for maximum comfort and effectiveness

  • An alternative to CPAP for many with mild–moderate sleep apnea

Is a MAD Right for You?

MADs are most effective for adults with:

  • Mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea

  • Primary snoring due to tongue obstruction

  • CPAP intolerance

  • Certain bite or jaw positions contributing to airway narrowing

A thorough exam, sleep study, and dental assessment can determine if this treatment is a good fit for your needs.

What to Expect

  1. Consultation & Exam – We evaluate your airway, teeth, and jaw position.

  2. Custom Design – Impressions or 3D scans create a precise fit.

  4. Follow-Up – We monitor your sleep and oral health to ensure long-term success. This is a custom-made oral appliance worn during sleep to protect your teeth and jaw from the harmful effects of grinding (bruxism) and clenching. Designed to comfortably fit over your upper or lower teeth, a nightguard acts as a protective barrier that cushions the teeth, reduces muscle tension, and helps prevent enamel wear, fractures, and jaw pain.
